Working out in a wig??

Updated: Apr 22

One of my friends recently invited me and a few others to a yoga class to celebrate her birthday.  It was a gorgeous, sunny day and the class was outside and such a treat!  But ahead of the event, I was thinking, how do I manage my wig for a yoga class?!  One of the big challenges for wig wearers is exercising.  I’ll be honest.  I focus primarily on two types of exercise: running and weight training.  I weight train in my garage alone or with my husband, so I do not care what I’m wearing.  When I run outside, I run with a cap on.  I sweat too much and get too hot to ever want to attempt to wear a wig of any kind and I mostly run alone or with a friend and I am running so fast that no one can see I don’t have hair (totally joking here as that is NOT the case).  But a yoga class, with people behind me, staring at the back of my head…?

It all comes back to the very reason I started to wear wigs in the first place, which is that even though my illness and treatment were over, having no hair and wearing caps or scarves made me appear sick to the outside world, and as a result, that made me feel different and not “back to normal.”  I decided to start wearing wigs.  Having hair again got rid of the looks - whether they were curious or sympathetic or concerned.

Wearing a wig in the office or the grocery store or shopping, etc. is one thing.  Wearing a wig when you are exercising is another thing.  You sweat, you get hot, you move around a lot – and these are all things to consider when it comes to what you are going to put on your head.  You absolutely can go with a cap or even nothing at all.  It really comes down to how comfortable you feel!  For me, I am the kind of person who wants to attract as little attention as possible.  I mean, chances are that I will get my foot stuck in the pedal of the bike in the cycling class and then fall halfway over on the floor and have people stare at me anyway (this really happened), so why start out with eyes on me?

If you feel similarly, let me suggest “active wigs,” which are wigs meant for movement and/or exercise.  I have two currently and they are awesome for throwing on for walks or Saturday sports events with kids or an actual workout.  You do have to have a headband that goes all around to cover the seam of the wig, but it looks pretty natural and prevents you from having to get your nice daily wigs sweaty.  And the band keeps hair out of your face.

I haven’t tried these, yet, but Flox Hair has a bunch: https://floxhair.com/collections/active?page=2

Keep in mind, an active wig is NOT the same as a ponytail wig, which is (generally) a wig that is made to be worn up, but doesn’t need a band around it.  There are also hat wigs that are made with no hair on the top so that a hat can be worn without extra height or heat.  I have a hat wig as well, but when I exercise, I want my hair out of my way completely, so the active wig is the best, in my opinion.

Whatever you decide to do, I will throw my two cents in, here, and say that being active is essential in life!  When you move, you just feel better.  Hair or no, get out there and have a great day!
