I have purchased some gorgeous wigs that are cut, colored and styled beautifully, but none of them look truly natural out of the box and onto the head. And here's why: wigs have a LOT of hair - and that hair is uniformly thick. Your real hair is thinner in certain areas (around your face, in particular). In order to make your wig look truly natural, I believe you have to have it customized to your face and possibly cut or colored, and definitely thinned a bit. This is now your hair, after all, so make it really feel like it is!

If you are fortunate to live in a city with a great wig retail store, they will often offer wig customization once you have made your purchase. Ordering online makes this harder, but not impossible. There is no reason why a good hair stylist at a reputable salon can't do this for you. The challenge is that some stylists are nervous to cut a wig; they know how expensive it is and they don't want to ruin it by accident (this hair does not grow back!). Call around, ask. If you are local in San Diego, I have a couple of good suggestions.
On a personal note, I had a longer wig I wore for quite a while then happened to see a magazine ad that showed a woman with similar color and length of hair, but with more layers in the front. I took my wig into a stylist and had her add more layers around the face and it made a huge difference. A few of my friends noticed right away.
The bottom line is that your wig is YOUR HAIR, so make it yours! You want it to feel comfortable, look natural and flatter your unique face.
